  • Drop at SPILL

Drop in the Ocean was last performed live in and around Ipswich from 11am til 5 pm everyday from Thurs 1st til Sat 3rd November 2018. If you made a wish and would like to say anything more about the experience, please do follow the ‘Contact’ link above to get in touch with me. Heartfelt thanks for stopping and wishing, Jess

  • “Only in contemplation of [water] do I achieve true self-forgetfulness and feel my own limited individuality merge into the universal”

    Thomas Mann

  • What would the world be, once bereft | Of wet and of wildness?

Let them be left, | O let them be left, wildness
and wet; | Long live the weeds and the wilderness
    yet.

    Gerard Manley Hopkins Inversnaid 1918

  • Water sustains all Life.

Her songs begin in the tiniest raindrops,
transform to flowing rivers, travel by majestic
oceans and thundering clouds, and back to
earth, to begin again. When water is threatened,
    all living things are threatened.

Hopi Indian Indigenous Declaration on Water 2001

A wishing cairn on Ipswich waterfront trickles out into the Orwell water last night placed after the applause for the final Clarion Call... Yesterday's final #dropintheocean walk was a lot of navigating the alleys & snickets of the estates south of the river then crossing Gyppeswyk park & into the crowds heading for the football (lots of wishes there, including a man from Aberystwyth & his young son & so another unexpected conversation in Welsh) & cutting my route shorter to make time for the enthusiasm & curiosity of this place; a penultimate wish with tears (in a good way) on the Waterfront. Fare thee well wishes & wishers & water-thinkers of #ipswich. My legs may have walked me around the city, but it's you who've moved me. A huge thank you to the resilient & heroic volunteers who have supported me (& kept up with my marching & route diversions), to the brilliant @latour.cyclecafe for hosting me & housing the yoke, & to the @spill_festival team for supporting me & having the work as part of a this festival. Humbling & inspiring to see the huge range of work happening here... #spill2018 #walkingart #womenwalking #sociallyengagedart #ecology #activistperformance
Sunshine, shadows & two intrepid volunteers accompanied me on yesterday's epic #dropintheocean walk day 2 of 3 for @spill_festival 10 miles of encounters & wishing around Ispwich (Ispwish?): memories shared of snow, near-drowning, sea rescues, the sound of children playing in the bath, watching raindrops on windows, stone-skimming ('you just feel the stress bounce away from you with the stone...'). Water as terrifying, 'bigger than us', but also a source of contentment, well-being, wonder & magic. Today is the third & final day of the performance. Starting & finishing as usual from outside the epic @latour.cyclecafe See you out there #ipswich ! #SPILL2018 #SPILLfestival #water #walkingart #womenwalking
Well, well (wishing), well... what a wonderful first day of walking & wishing & water in circles. Beautiful Ipswich... I even had one wonderfully unexpected conversation yn Gymraeg (in Welsh) with a woman who had been an evacuee in Aberdyfi near my hometown Aberystwyth. Today it rained (photos from yesterday!) Tomorrow is sunshine (i think) but regardless of weather I felt shined on by the good folk of #ipswich anyway. See you tomorrow for the second day of #dropintheocean Thanks to all the support & care from the @spill_festival team & to the volunteers who walked the whole way with me at a discreet distance. For anyone who has ever been on a walk with me, you know this is no mean feat. Ahem. #spillfestival2018
    Just add water... #SPILL2018 #SPILLfestival #Ipswich #dropintheocean
Walking performance Drop in the Ocean starts today in Ispwich for @spill_festival 11-5 Thurs-Sat. Look out for yoke & buckets, waterproofs & walking boots. Let your curiosity run wild & ask me what i'm doing... And i will invite you to make a wish... #SPILL2018 #SPILLfestival #Ipswich #dropintheocean
Good morning #ipswich! Recceing the routes for #dropintheocean at @spill_festival which start tomorrow. Enjoying being yoke-less til then!
Surprisingly prescient message for a walking artist who facilitates random encounters w strangers in public space... On the train to Ispwich to perform #dropintheocean at @spill_festival. Thank you for the good luck chocolate @richardgott #boojasforbreakfast
Walking art. Stamping art. Slow preparations continue for #dropintheocean @spill_festival
Geology lesson? No. Art. Curious bit of #dropintheocean planning for @spill_festival 22 days til donning the yoke & buckets #walkingart #walkingwomen #onetooneperformance #ecoart #ecoactivism
Yesterday, a sea monster arrived at Aberystwyth with a #cleanseas message. I cried. Beautiful, clever, #epic, site-specific, #activist puppet performance w sea legs from brilliant @theatrbydbychan @cleanseascragen #findyourepic
